Awarded by Bedbuyer as "Best Value Mattress in Australia", Sherman mattresses are a luxury pocket spring mattress, built in the traditional "innerspring" style, not rolled up in a box and priced at less than half of what you'd expect to pay for a similar mattress in a big brand store.
But we don't want you to just take our word for that. We want you to really be able to understand value before you purchase a mattress.
Mattress brands have to be incredibly good at marketing their products and there is a lot of "marketing sizzle" out there - along with some outlandish claims. To cut through the hype, we look at what you should be paying for a quality mattress that will last for many years and help you to sleep.
How to really judge value in a mattress?
This is a loaded question because the word “value” means different things to different people. One thing the word doesn’t mean is “lowest price”. We all know that often, the cheapest product is not the best choice. When it comes to something as important as your quality of sleep, I wouldn’t think too many of us would be setting out to find the cheapest mattress on the market.
If a mattress improves your sleep, and this improves your quality of life, then the “value” in a mattress is really difficult to put a number on.
But what if you’ve looked at several different mattresses and you believe that they will all be comfortable enough to improve your sleep (and you can send them all back if they dont!).
Then, the way to judge “value” becomes a little more difficult to work out.
In the Australian mattress industry, any mattress brand needs to be pretty good at marketing their product. After all, the retail mattress scene in Australia is extremely competitive.
Every mattress company will tell you that you’ll sleep well on their mattress. Of course, that’s not the truth. I don’t sleep well on any solid foam mattress or on a lot of the rolled-up mattress that comes in a box (just one of the reasons why Sherman won’t ever make this style of mattress).
However, I know that I like to sleep on a traditional style of pocket spring mattress with foam comfort layers with a fair amount of cushioning. You’ll find literally dozens of mattresses in the big brand stores that match that description, with the price of this style of mattress varying from $1,000 up to $10,000
The only way to really discover which mattress offers the best value is to break it down into these two metrics:
How well the mattress helps you to sleep:
The only way for you to find this out is to buy it and spend several nights sleeping on it. Whatever mattress you choose, make sure that you can send the mattress back in some sort of trial. If your new mattress makes your sleep worse (or your pain worse), you don’t want to be stuck with it.
How long the mattress will last:
To judge this for yourself, you’ll need to know the specifications in the mattress. Spring units will generally last for decades, it’s the foam in mattresses that wear out. You’ll need to know what the grades are in the foam and how thick the layers of foam are.
We have an article on our site that helps to explain mattress foam grades and how long these foams should last here.
Only when you can put a number on these two factors, can you really judge the value in a mattress.
So, Mattress #1 might look fancy and is "apparently" reduced down from $3000 down to $1000 - but it could turn out to be a little too soft for you and the grades of foam in the comfort layers are not as high as they should be for the price.
Whereas Mattress #2 is $1000 and not on sale but feels comfortable, helps you with that sore back you’ve been struggling with and the specifications and foam grades indicate that the mattress will last many, many years.
No clues for guessing which mattress is the best value here.
This is a good time to mention that at Sherman Mattresses, we publish our full list of specifications so that you can compare the real value to any other mattress. We’ve been making mattresses for decades and we know that all of the Sherman mattresses will stay comfortable for many years.
Sherman has been awarded as “Australia’s Best Value Mattress” in both 2020 and in 2021 by Bedbuyer.com.au, Australia’s leading independent mattress review site. We beat all the big brands and all the online mattress-in-a-box brands.
The only thing left for you to do is find out if one of our mattresses helps you to sleep. We give you 100 nights to sleep on the mattress and if you don’t find better sleep, we’ll pick the mattress up and issue you with a full refund. You can read all about our hasle-free trial here.
